I am the happy owner of a 1982 242 Volvo. Overall, the the car has performed very well for me; but I do have a minor complaint. The linkage running from the windshield-wiper motor to the driver's wiper is relatively "sloppy" and every so often will make a clanking noise as the wiper noticeably bounces back and forth. This happens primarily during light rain conditions. It is as if the wiper-blade itself temporarily sticks and then slips forward again. Are there any 240 or 260 series Volvo owners with the same problem? I have owned the car now for two years and the wipers work fine except for the clanking noise. Rick Moll ...!ihnp4!afinitc!rbm

Lift the cap to expose the nut. ( The cap is part of the wiper arm.) If the nut is loose, you may be seeing the slop in the splines. I have a 1982 245 DL and have had no problems with it. We love it. Same goes for the 1973 142E.
