The March 1984 issue of Road & Track (p.112) has an article on
automotive quality. J.D. Powers and Assoc. compiled a table entitled
Consumer Satisfaction Index. 

Shown below are the tables for 1982 and 1983.

Perhaps the earlier posting about CSI did not mention where the
numbers came from.  Car owners were interviewed, I suppose with
a pre-defined set of questions.  Their cars were all about a year old,
old enough to have had some problems but unlikely to have fallen
apart due to old age.  This seems to me like a good survey method.

Generally the US manufacturers ranked Ford (best), Chrysler, GM, AMC for
the 1982 model year (latest surveyed).
