I don't have an 84 Mazda, but I almost got one. I ended up with
a Toyota Corolla. For the features I wanted, The corolla and
626 were about the same price, and since toyota has had a better
reliability record in the past, I went with the toyota. The non-
luxury 626's were quite noisey, but I sure liked the way the
Mazda handled.

I am female. I wonder why it is in so many cases that the wife
refuses to drive a stick shift? My last car was an
automatic, but I decided to get a stick shift this time. Please
tell your wife, it only took me about a week to get comfortable
with it, and it is actually pretty fun doing the stick shift.
It was very easy to learn how to drive a stick shift (I learned
how when I went test driving cars.) After only a week, the
shifting was already becoming "second nature".

I have 1983 Mazda 626, not 1984. But I think it is pretty much
the same car. And mine has 5 speed transmission.

I like the car very much. It has a reasonable performance and
good quality for the money. The only major problem I had was that
the pulley(sp?) on A/C belt was broken because the belt was adjusted
too tight. It was fixed by warantee, of course. Also, after running
about 10,000 miles on the ROUGH roads of Ann Arbor, I start hearing
some minor noises from the body.

If you want to buy automatic transmission, I strongly suggest you to look
into Toyota Camry. I did the same comparison, but I chose 626 because
I wanted 5-speed and I could not add the options I want on 5-speed Camry.
Also, Camry was a bit more expensive. One more factor: Folding back seat
of 626 is kind of convenient, sometimes.

Conclusion: Do careful comparison between 626 and Camry, and make your
choice. You cannot go wrong either way.

I have a 1983 Madza 626. It is the same as the 1984 except for cosmetics.

The ride is firm, but as a result, it is the best handling car I have ever
owned.
We had some minor problems that needed adjustment when new, buut no serious
problems.
The car is not a hot rod, the engine seems just as strong at 3 grand as it
does at4 and 5 grand. Power is adaquate, nothing spectacular.
The car cruses at highway speeds extremely quietly, no wind noise, no engine
noise. ( 5 speed) This is one of its strong points.
It has plently of room for a family, ( We are 4) and is one of the reasons
why we bought it.
We are very pleased with it. Now , if I were single, or had no kids Hmmmm.
