Thanks to all those who responded to my query concerning my inability to umount /usr. It was the fact that the accounting had been turned on somewhere in the distant past and never turned off. When I destroyed and restored the root filesystem, the files in /etc/rc2.d and /etc/rc0.d used to control it were NOT restored. Apparently once accounting's enabled, it's enabled through any number of reboots (at least that's how it behaved on my system)? In any event, the problem has been taken care of and I can shut down without fsck'ing /usr/ on reboot! -- Joel M.
