[comp.unix.i386] MiniScribe drives and AHA1542A

root@hacker.UUCP (Admin) (06/16/90)

I found a MiniScribe 380Mb SCSI drive (320 formatted) for $999 which seems a
good enough price, but I'm concerned about compatibility. I don't know the
model number, but somebody out there should be able to figure it out from the
capacity.

Any way what I really wanted to know is whether this is as good as it seems?
I want to use it with an Adaptec host adapter 1542A (what else?) under Esix.
I'd like to make this purchase within the next week, so any comments or
warnings are welcome. Thanks in advance. -- SMY

A couple of pointers: I installed a Miniscribe 1588 SCSI drive (760 meg,
650meg formatted).

1}. Set your asyncronus transfer to ON. You'll get an error message
when you first boot up the ADAPTEC BIOS FORMAT UTILITY, but
nothing will work unless you set AT to ON (jumper number one).

2}. The BIOS will recognize this device as some ID/LUN which is
other than that to which it is set. Ie: if you have it set as
Id 0/Lun 0, the BIOS may think its at Id 0/Lun 4. Why? I dunno.
