[comp.unix.i386] aha1542a and wangtek tape drive and isc 2.0.1

phil@dprmpt.UUCP (Philip Hall) (07/10/90)

i am trying to install an adaptec 1542a into an hp
vectra rs20c running isc 2.0.1.
i am using an at style esdi controller as my primary
disk controller. i want to use the aha board with a
wangtek tape drive. i believe it is called a
legacy 500. at least the name on the box is that. it was bought as a package
deal with the adaptec board. the hardware does work, i have installed it
under "sorry for the bad language" 'dos' and it works fine.
now for the problem:
i have tried installing it two ways.
1) as a wangtek driver, using kconfig and choosing to install a new driver,
then choosing wangtek. i can not access the drive.
i get the message,
streamer: end of tape
streamer: beginning of tape
streamer: no tape drive
etc.
i have tried installing it as a scsi host adapter
using kconfig and going thru the hpdd configuration.
i set it up as the second controller.
the problem then is, i can not boot.
i get the message
booting the unix system.
then nothing.
if i have a tape in the drive, it gets accessed after the message, like it
was trying to boot off the tape.

the bios is disabled on the adaptec 1542a.
the jumpers are set at their default settings:
irq 11
i/o port 330h
dma chan 5
by the way, this is the only device on the scsi bus. it is addressed as device
7.

i would appreciate any help anyone may be able to give me.
