After I posted my report regarding sudden and effective service from SunRiver, Richard Foulk asked me to run his benchmark and post the results. I've done it in two ways. The first is on the native console, with and without the 80x24 subwindow and then the SunRiver workstation with and without the 80x24 subwindow. UNIX: ISC 2.0.2 (this is constant for all four results) CPU: 33MHz Micronics, 64K cache, 8Mb RAM (same for all four) 80387: No, same for all four X server: native console ISC X11R3 1.1 ORVGAni SunRiver workstation ISC X11R3 1.1 PVGA1A Resolution: native console 1024x768x16 SunRiver workstation 800x600x16 Video card: native console Orchid ProDesigner Plus SunRiver workstation their VGA setup Real times: SunRiver w/o subwindow 0m9.19s Native w/o subwindow 0m7.95s SunRiver w/subwindow 3m0.74s Native w/subwindow 1m21.16s Qualifiers... The system wasn't "dried up", i.e. there were a couple of 19,200bps uucico's running (which I think is quite realistic) and the "subwindow" figures are for starting an xterm -geometry 80x24 -fn 8x13 +j & in the existing main xterm window. Scrolling in the subwindow version is noticably slower, but I was able to read it. Scrolling in my first level xterm was jerky and I often couldn't read it. None of that has anything to do with anything if you're looking for fire breathing performance, but I was watching the test while I imagined how I'd like what was going by if I needed to read it. Now what really interests me is if I post the results of running the benchmark on both X stations at once, what kinds of comparisons will we get from the 386/ix community? :-) :-) If I add a third, fourth, or fifth X station to the host adapter card and run all 3, 4, or 5 benchmarks at once, what kinds of comparisons will we get from anyone who can carry their machine and a cup of coffee at the same time? :-) :-) :-) OK, maybe not fair, but I already said I was a deleriously happy SunRiver customer... -- Bill Kennedy usenet {texbell,att,cs.utexas.edu,sun!daver}!ssbn!bill internet bill@ssbn.WLK.COM or attmail!ssbn!bill
