[comp.unix.i386] What should I buy?

jxh@attain.Teradyne.com (Jim Hickstein) (08/05/90)

Forgive me if this isn't the place for this, but I need a recommendation
on which of hte (evidently) many UNIX offerings for my NEC 386SX box.
I've got 4MB, a Video-7 VRAM (1024x768), Multisync XL (20-inch color),
MSC mouse, 80MB ESDI disk, the usual stuff.

I was running OS/2, because I used it at work. Now, at my new job,
I've got a Sun on my desk, and I don't use the 386 much any more.
OS/2 was at least an Operating System compared to Anarchy-DOS, but
it's time to get real. :-) X would be nice: OSF/MOTIF (do I know what
I'm talking about, here?) would be nice. Presentation Manager would be
nifty, but the Great Convergence (of GUIs) is not yet upon us.
(Speaking of which, will it converge, or will it overshoot and oscillate
for ten years while its all tied up in the courts? Anyway.)

What's available? From whom? How much is this going to cost me?
You people seem to have chewed this over pretty throughly in here, so there
must be a concensus by now, right?

Please email recommendations. "Have FQDN will summarize."

RF engineer: "It's close. But, I suppose you don't know about 'close'".
Software engineer: "Well... You have 'close'. We have *sometimes*."
