[net.auto] "Driving is a privilage"

mam@charm.UUCP (Matthew Marcus) (02/20/84)

Get out the butane lighters, incendiary devices, and fusion drives
because here's a topic guaranteed to cause mega-flamage!

The standard Gov't propaganda is that "Driving is a privilage, not
a right.". Think about this. Who gave the government the right to dole
out this privilage? Do they earn this because they built the roads?
They didn't build *all* the roads! What makes driving such a special
activity? After all, in many states, you can ride a bicycle w/o licence,
so presumably bike riding is a right. The same goes for horses, which can
actually do some damage in some sorts of accident. Is the use of common
chemicals to be considered a "privilage"? After all, you can do damage by
making an explosive out of common chemicals. It is even possible that this
may occur inintentionally.

Consider: Who says "Driving is..." most often? Who wrote that line?
Somebody in the Government, that's who! Who benifits most directly from its
widespread acceptance? You guessed it. After all, if what you want to do is
a privilage which only I can grant, out of magnaminity, then I can put any
conditions I want on it, such as the mass registration of all cars, a 1984-ism
if I ever saw one. Yes, I know that registration helps locate car thieves and
hit&run drivers, but isn't it a little scary to think that every driver is known
to Big Brother by his description, kind and year of car, SS number, date of
birth, and driving record?

Who should kick the drunks off the road? If driving is a right, nobody?
I don't feel like driving with them. So who has more "right" to the road?
They, who menace the other drivers, or I, who am probably still a menace but
to some lesser degree (I hope)? Right, let's make driving a right. Then, let us
establish a body to keep it safe. Hey, why don't we call it government? After
all, this body is to govern, at least, the roads. Oh well... Maybe I am
strange but I kind of like other people than myself know who owns my
vehicles. Sort of helps settle arguments. Again, oh well...
