[comp.unix.i386] Paradise VGA 1024 and ISC

karp-brad@CS.YALE.EDU (Brad Karp) (08/07/90)

I just purchased a Paradise VGA 1024 board, with 512K of memory, to replace my
old Video 7 VEGA VGA board, thinking that I'd reap considerably increased
speed from the 16-bit bus vs. the old 8-bit bus on the Video 7.

I've noticed that when I use "setcolor -s on" to enable hardware scrolling, the
Paradise board appears to scroll more slowly than my old VEGA VGA with
hardware scrolling enabled. I have the board configured to automatically use
the 16-bit bus if available, so I assume that it is doing so. Does anyone have
any idea what may be going on here, or a suggestion about something that I
might be doing wrong?

I remember reading a note about commenting out the VGAROM line in vpix.cnf
with certain graphics boards a while back in this newsgroup. Under what
circumstances is this advisable, and what are the pros and cons of doing this?

Lastly, does anyone out there have experience using this graphics board
with ISC's new 256-color X server? How does the board perform?

Thanks for any information/suggestions.
