[comp.unix.i386] Perstor Controller & Intel 386 Unix?

heasley@bu-ast.bu.edu (Jim Heasley) (08/07/90)

I recently came across an ad for a disk controller from a company
named PERSTOR which claims to essentially double the amount of
information that can be stored on most standard disks. From what I can
gather from their flyer, they provide a controller which uses a special
encoding scheme and a replacement BIOS for the computer that understands
the mapping between standard disk types and their encoding. They claim
to be Sco Xenix, Interactive Unix, and OS/2 compatible.

I'm running Intel's (formerly Bell Technology) Unix 3.2.2 and would be
very interested to make a major upgrade to my disk storage for the very
modest price of a new controller (it seems too good to be true, in fact).
However, I'm a bit nervous about buying the controller and discovering
that it's not compatible with the Intel kernel. Has anyone out there all
ready tried this and if so with what results?

Ok.. well, here's what I can tell you.

   Go for it.

I am (as they told me at Perstore) the first person to have run one of them
undert a Un*x variant (ISC) and they didn't have a clue then but offered to
refund me if it didn't work.

Give it a shot -- it is a sweet card.

It works! I got ISC 2.0.2 to install with the Perstor controller and a
Miniscribe 6085. The controller that works is actually my second Perstor.
The first one was flakey as hell. Some drives worked some of the time.

Anyway, I got it to work with the replacement controller card (with 3.05 BIOS)
without a hitch. I did nothing out of the ordinary to make it run.

Any other stories out there with this controller?

BTW, I received a bunch of Email messages asking about this combo, and figured
posting this to be as good as return mail.

I have a Perstor PS180-16FN running in combo with a Segate ST-251-1 28ms
hard drive giving me 78M of storage. It's a pretty zippy setup.
Real easy to setup. Highly recommended.
