[comp.unix.i386] Booting in Single-User Mode

You can edit the initdefault line in /etc/inittab.  Change the
default init state from 3 to 1, and the system will always boot in
single-user mode.  After you boot, enter the command init 3 to
switch into multi-user mode, when/if you want to.
