Regarding the vibration problem in the Toyota Celica. I
have a '78 Toyota Celica liftback, and have a vibration at
65-70 mph or when I deaccelerate, or let off on the gas
hard. It is caused by the following:
The tail pipe, for some reason, shifts its position as
the car gets older. Under the car at the location of the
footwell for the rear passenger (driver's side) the tail
pipe is attached to the chasis by a rubber grommet to a "U"
shaped bracket. The tail pipe seems to shift position and
rubs against the bracket. This gives a high pitched squeek,
a low grumble, and a seat rattling vibrating of 20-40 hz. I
have tried bending the bracket, replacing the grommet,
moving the pipe, etc. Nothing has proved a permanent fix
yet. This has nothing to do with tire balance etc. Look no
further. When you get a permanent fix, please let me know
as I hate to drive the car on long trips because of this. It
seems to do no damage yet, but is extremely anoying!
