[net.auto] gear problem

I have a 1982 Buick, and I am having a problem with it. This is it:
In the mornings when I start the car and I change gear to drive, it
doesn't run when I accelerate, I have to stand there for few seconds
until it does decide to run. This only happens when the car is cold.
And when it does take the gear it makes a clack clack noise. Does
anybody have an idea of what this might be?

The clack clack noise could possibly be the gear selector working
improperly. But there would have to be many clack clack sounds resulting
from the parking mechanism attempting to set itself. That is a worst
case. I do not know the particulars of your car, but my Horizon uses
the cars oil system to run its transmission, so my car must warm up a
little before the transmission operates smoothly.
