[net.auto] A new emergency kit question

Try putting some of the items in boxes mounted under the hood.
I've had good luck with that in the past.

I applaud all those making the emergency kit comments, they are very
helpful. However, I have a small problem about where to store the kit.
I own a Honda station wagon (great little car, I heartily recommend it),
it has no trunk (obviously), and no place for this emergency kit. I
don't care to have it rattle about in the back. I suspect this is a
generic problem for station wagons. The only out of sight storage is the
tool compartment (for the jack and what-not) and it is already full.
The only other place I can see putting it is under the front seats,
and then it would tend to slide out unless strapped in somehow (Velcro
maybe?). So how 'bout it, where should it go? (Don't get cute!)

There is usually a place under the hood next to the wiper motor. I
usually carry a quart of oil there, and in winter, the tire chains. I would
recomend wrapping the stuff in an old towl and fastening it down somehow, as
I don't think you really want this stuff sliding into the wiper motor. I
would also recomend against putting highway flares and tools under there,
unless wrapped against the elements. It may not be the dryest place in the
world.
Another trick: keep an old rag under the hood in an out of the way but
easily accesable place (I tuck it behind a battery cable where it attaches to
the frame) for use when checking the oil. Saves a lot on hankerchieves and
pant legs.
