How do you fix turn signals that don't blink? I hear they are easy
to fix.

About one year ago, I had the problem that when I tried to turn on my turn
signal (ts) they would go on, on the appropriate side, but they wouldn't blink.
If this is the problem you are having, the answer is simple: you need a new
flasher. This is the device that makes your turn signals and emergency
flashers, blink.

If you have an american car, getting one should not be much of a problem.
You will probably be able to pick up a flasher at any auto parts store for
your make and model. The cost should be from $6-12. However, if you have an
import, you will probably have to go an auto dealer who carries your make of
car, and go to their parts and service section. You will probably find the
cost of your part much more than an american car part. In the case of my
Mazda GLC wagon (1981), my flasher cost me $32!

Once you get the flasher, it should be pretty easy for you to replace (I did
mine, and I'm NO mechanic). Go to your local mechanic and ask him if he can
point it out to you. It will probably be under the dashboard, in the general
area left of the steering column. Once you find it, unplug it (don't force it
because there may be a screw or two holding it in place that you may have to
remove first). Then replace it with the new one. Test your turn signals, and
everything should work.

By the way, you might try testing your current flasher just to make sure that
the malfunction isn't caused by a loose plug connection to the flasher.

I hope this helps. But if you are in doubt, ASK YOUR MECHANIC!

Good luck.

Much more likely that an indicator bulb is burned out than the
flasher unit is defective. If either front or rear bulb is out,
flasher will not cause good bulb to blink.

Unless you have installed a "heavy-duty" turn signal flasher, turn signals
not blinking is an indication that one of the turn signal lamps at the
front or back of your car is burned out.

Before dashing off to get a new flasher relay, check the bulbs in your
light fixtures. Most US cars have the problem of continuity through
the lighting system. Just replacing the bulb may solve your problem.
One side of the system may work while the other does not. This is a
symptom of a burned out bulb. Flashers rarely stop working, but they
can on occasion.

Another thing you might try before buying a new flasher is what I did: switch
the emergency flasher unit with the T/S flasher. On American cars these are
usualy the same unless you have something unusual (i.e. early Mercury Cougar
with sequential turn signals). If the turn signls now work and the emergency
flashers do not, the flasher unit is defective.

I don't know if anyone pointed this out yet as I haven't been
paying much attention lately but........

Many cars have flashers designed for a three lamp load ie one
in the front and two in the back. Thus designed they will not
flash when one of the bulbs blows out giving the driver the
idea that something is wrong so he will have it repaired.

You may have noticed cars pulling trailers which have these
type of flashers.....they flash at an incredibly high rate
due to the extra loading of bulbs from the trailer. When
trailering the standard flasher is generally replaced with
a "heavy duty" type which has no dependance on load. Now the
problem is you have no indication of a bulb failure unless
you are in the habit of checking. Personally I think the
load dependant type are better.

I've had the turn signal quit blinking on cars I have previously owned.
Every time it happened it was due to a burned out lightbulb.
