[gnu.g++.lib.bug] Managed to get g++ and libg++.a installed

thakur@ZERKALO.HARVARD.EDU (Manavendra K. Thakur) (11/27/89)

Hi everyone,

Many many thanks to the people who responded to my long plea for help
in installing g++ and libg++.a on a Sun 3 running 4.0.3.

With the help I received, I was able to successfully install the
compiler and library.

The bulk of my problems were arising because I wasn't using the Gnu
assembler. Also, the discrepancies between the Makefiles, README, and
the texinfo files were confusing.

But I learned the correct way to install software, and I also learned
how to modify g++'s gcc.c file so that g++ would use an alternate name
for the Gnu ld. This way, g++ can use the Gnu ld it needs, but gcc
and cc can continue using Sun's ld, which has the advantage of
supporting dynamic linking.

As well as anyone else out there whose mail I might not have received.
