[pdx.general] Class on late 20th century music history and theory.

steveb@tekcsc8.WV.TEK.COM (Steve Bilow) (11/20/90)

Folks,

A number of you guys already know me but for those who don't I'm Steve Bilow
and I have a strong academic background in the theories and historical origins
of 20th century "serious" (read "academic") music. I studied composition
under Morton Subotnick, Mel Powell, Barry Schrader, and Stephen Mosko at
CalArts in Los Angeles in the late '70s and early '80s. I am considering
putting together a private class (for a small fee but potentially for free) for
the "right" group of music students, professors and other academics, and the
general public on the theoretical basis, historical background, and
philosophical premises of academic music from 1940 to 1990 (roughly translated
as Berg and Webern through Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Tod Machover, etc.)

What I'm trying to find out is if anyone in the Portland area is interested in
such a thing. I, for one, having looked at the catalogs of most of the areas
academic institution, find little being taught in this area. If you are
interested please drop me some mail to steveb@orca.wv.tek.com or post a
followup here, and I'll contact you. Thanks, in advance.

Later,

Steve Bilow
