		Robert Lucky describes how digital communication and the
		invention of the laser led to the development of optical
		communication. This a general-level talk, of interest to all
		who have ever wondered how you can get a voice on a pair
		of wires. Lucky is an excellent speaker. You may recognize
		him as author of the "reflections" column in the IEEE
		magazine "spectrum".
