[sci.military] Using High Powered Lasers for weaponry

Being a member of the IEEE Laser and Electrooptics Society, I was interested
to find in one of their later issues (references if you want to know)
an article claiming 500W/sq. mtr. power output of energy. In that same issue
there was some discussion about using natural materials as amplifiers to
increase power output and concentration.

Do field weapons exist (ala your favorite sci-fi show using
lasers/phasers) ? Seems to me that making a laser battery with about a
dozen high powered lasers in sync shouldn't be that hard. You could
burn holes in your enemy in a fashion that would be less "inhumane"
than shrapnel and explosives.

Disclaimer: I don't approve of killing for politics. For a cause - maybe..
