[sci.military] fake MiGs cost more than real ones

Amusing item I just noticed in the Jan 23 issue of Aviation Leak: the
US Army is building a large target drone, basically a plastic mockup
of a MiG, for air-defence system testing. The amusing part is that the
drone will cost about a million dollars a copy and will not be ready
until 1992, while you can buy a MiG on the open market for about
$300,000 for immediate delivery. (In fairness, this is in the middle
of a two-page story about how the US government *is* buying MiGs for
testing and training.)

But the MiG you can buy is a Mig-17, of 1950s vintage. I think that
the new ones look and perform far, far differently.

Aah, but china now offers brand new Jian J-7 (Mig-21 clone) for sale on open
market... And Mig-21 is much more recent. Has now finally been phased out
of actual Warsaw Pact front line, but still good.
