From: mdeale@polyslo.calpoly.edu (Myron Deale) Hello Netlanders, I was flashing channels on the boob tube and came across a show called "National Geographic Explorer" on "TBS - the Superstation." (I have no affiliation with either). It is supposed to be on again at various times this week. Sunday (4/2) begins a new show? Be patient, there are four vignettes, each 30 min? The last one is entitled "Afghanistan: the Soviet Experience." Apparently some American film journalists got permission to ride with various Soviet special forces. They had some footage of going along in an APC: Japanese music box, American lyrics, Bruce Lee photos on interior wall. Lots of interviews. Not much shoot 'em up, bang bang. One unit appeared to be, hmm, uhh, comradely. Ahem, too comradely? Ever hear of the Spetsnaz? [now I've got your attention :-] They follow them into a helicopter transport and out on a mission. There's a conspicuous lack of film footage depicting tactics. Suprised? Note that flares are cheap. There's some footage of a Hind, in flight about 100 yards away. The thing is huge, fast, lots of weapons, but is it maneuverable? I was left wanting to see much more. Good camera work. Note: if sov mucky-mucks had editorial approval (likely) then what the soldiers had to say ... a grain of salt is perhaps in order. Thanks Gorby. >Filming of Soviet Training
In the past, British and West German film crews have been allowed to film
the Warsaw Pact's answer to REFORGER - call DRYZBA (sp?) - or Brotherhood
In Arms. I've seen the films of DRYZBA '82 and '84. Basically, they are
not much different then what you'd see in the filming of REFORGER exercises
except they are a little more 'rehearsed'.

You must mean 'Druzhba' which is Russian for 'Friendship'. 'Brotherhood in Arms' would translate into 'Bratiia po Oruzhia' which is the name of the WP spring manueuvers. (Note: the letter 'y' in Russian translates into a long u sound).
