From: maniac%garnet.Berkeley.EDU@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (George W. Herbert) On Friday I attended the 115th annual meeting of the US Naval Institute which was held on the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate school in Monterey, CA. Despite car trouble, it was good... A few highlights: USCG Admiral heard saying: "I'm not a real coast guard admiral. I'm really a warrant officer masquerading as an Admiral. All the real coast guard admirals are in Valdez, Alaska right now." R.Adm. William Owens, responding to a question stating whether the SSN-21 would be half again as quiet as the current Los Angeles (current production block): " I think that it's going to be much better than that." Explanation of why the sub-saharan navies section dropped out of the International Navies issue (as told by the Editor in Chief): When the article was being prepared, it included some information cleared by among other sources the state department as unclassified. When the issue was submitted to the Naval Intelligence and DIA, they had heart attacks about six points that were in the article. USNI tried to get it cleared, and prove that it had gotten the info from non-classified sources. They couldn't by press time, and didn't have time to revise the section. They had to either release the disputed info or pull the entire section. They pulled the section. The topics disputed included an incident between a US and local vessel (non-hostile), and some weapons-ownership questions. I was told that it had nothing to do with South African nuclear weapons: they were not mentioned at all. Pending the security review i'm not going to go into more detail (see continuing arguement about classified info...). All in all a fun event. Was anyone else there?
