Military: In the Falklands, the British sank the Argentine cruiser (General
   Belgrano??????)
Civilian: In the early '80's a US missile sub sank a Japanese (?) merchant
   by collision in the Sea of Japan. (Newspapers carried the story)

You want U.S.???  US military action was probably in WWII.
