TOKYO(AP) -- A U.S. SR-71 Blackbird spy plane based in Okinawa crashed in the
South China Sea during a routine mission Friday, but the two crewmen were
rescued, U.S. officials said.

The U.S. military in Japan said in a statement that the crew of
the aircraft, operating out of Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, reported engine
failure after takeoff.

In another interesting note, numerous Saturday papers carried a picture from
the Northrop final assembly area of Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, CA.
"According to Northrop's 1988 annual report, this is the first published
view of the final assembly portion of the plant." Three B-2s were shown,
all from the front view, unpainted, with numerous protective mats over them.

Certainly not something I expected to see in a Saturday paper. :-)
