One thing that a lot of people are interested in is gas mileage, yet I don't
recall seeing much discussion on what their cars *really* get. So how 'bout
it? What kind of mileage does *your* car get? PLEASE - only those of you
that have actually measured the mileage! No EPA estimates, and no "I get
*about* 50 mpg!" Lets have the cold hard facts!!!

I'll start things off with:

1979 Jeep CJ-7, 304 cid (5 liters) v-8 engine. All time low: 6 mpg, all time
high: 15 mpg, 4 year average: 12 mpg.

1984 Pontiac 6000 STE, 2.8 liter v-6 engine. First tank: 18 mpg.

Most of my driving comes from the 5 miles to and from work in the northern
Illinois climate (in the winter time, the car barely gets off the choke when I
get to work).

Here goes:

'83 Rabbit GTI, 25 mpg on daily commutes (rural two
laners, 35-55 mph), 29 mpg on highway trips (70-75
mph cruising). I've hit 30 only once in 14000 miles.

And as long as I'm at it:

'81 Kawasaki with clubman bars (the reduced frontal area
really makes a BIG difference), 57-58 mpg on daily commute,
62-63 mpg on highway trips, same speeds.

Eat your heart out, you gas mileage freaks! And BTW, my little
Kawasaki has been known to thoroughly humiliate a '71 Corvette
with a 454!

I have a 1982 Honda Civic 1300FE with 5 speed.

	Summer (50 deg +)
		Highway @ 55-60 MPH 50-55 MPG
In town with aprox 3 mile trips 40-45 MPG

	Winter
		Highway @ 55-60 MPH 45-50 MPG
In town with approx 3 mile trips 35-45 MPG

I have kept complete gas records since I bought the car in August 1982

`82 Reliant, 62,000 miles. (no, that's not a typo) Power steering but
non-assisted brakes and no AC. Automatic slushpot.

Average 23 to 24 mpg with Michelin XZX tires. With the original equipment
(Goodyear Viva) I averaged 26 to 27. On the highway, I've gotten over 30
with the original tires (long trips, no traffic). Highway now is about 26
to 27 mpg. Worst? I'm not really sure, but I suspect that it went down to
about 13 one night when I drove 95 miles in a snowstorm (2" to 3" all the way).
It was so cold that I had to keep up to about 35 mph and stay in second gear
to keep the engine warm enough to maintain torque. After that trip I started
using cardboard in front of the radiator.

I usually accelerate hard and cruise at the speed limit or with the majority
of traffic. I just can't seem to make the time to allow for leisurely trips.

This car's oil consumption was originally high (1800 miles/qt) but is now
down to about 3300 miles/qt. I've had Mobil 1 in since about 7500 miles,
and change it about every 22,000.

[*and aawwaayyy weee gooooo!]

Let's see...
1973 Gremlin-X: 20mpg on long trips (~200 miles or so)
			15mpg city driving

1973 Opel 1000: 22mpg on long trips (~200 miles or so)
			18 city driving

1972 Le Mans:	16mpg on long trips (~200 miles or so)
			12mpg city driving

	1983 Toyota Corolla SR-5 Hatchback:
33mpg round trip to CT (~400 miles)
			23mpg city driving

NOTE: by city driving, I mean the stop and go s**** that I
do around here in Eatontown, NJ...it is only 3 miles
to work, and that really cuts down on gas mileage.
the city driving I did back in CT. was about 10 minutes
to where I used to work, with much stop-and-go.

Constant Records since purchase:
				'Round town	commute long trips
1970 MGB GT: (purchase 12-82)
  in top form... 20 24 28-30
in bad form... 18 20 never

1976 Kawasaki KZ400 45 50 55-75

The commute has averaged 3-5 miles over the years. The variation in
long trip MPG for the bike was due to road type. In the summer of '82
my roommate and I worked for a branch of Victor Tech (RIP) in San Luis
Obispo - and had almost weekly commutes to Corp HQ in Scotts Valley
(near Santa Cruz). As some of you may know, that particular stretch
of Highway One is a biker's dream... and we took it an average of
twice a week, for fifteen or so weeks. Then, of course, the road washed
out. If only they could keep the RV's off that do 12.5 miles per hour
on those sensuous curves. Ah well, now that I'm in Oregon, we've got
some great spots here too.

I also drive an 83 Rabbit GTI:

avg gas mileage: 27 mpg
(speeds:0 -> 75; streets and freeways; commutes and short trips)

the only long trips have been from SF to Lake Tahoe (~400 roundtrip)
with speeds up to 70mph (average 60-65mph)
gas mileage: 31 mpg

The worst gas mileage I got was driving at Sears Point Raceway--
though the starter was also defective (and subsequently replaced)
with speeds up to 80 mph (up to 6500 rpm)
gas mileage: 18 mpg

This car conforms to California emission standards

My 81 Lynx gets 35 highway, 30 combined, and the citys out here are too far
apart for me to stay in one for an entire tankful. Also, schedualed
maintanance is easy and inexpensive.

1976 Toyota Celica GT Liftback. Average city mpg = 17 mpg, used mostly
in commute traffic and around town. Average highway mpg = 33-34 mpg.
Combined is approx. 25 mpg. I've changed carburetors from the Japanese
one to a Weber, but mpg is abouot the same. More horsepower though.
MPG is slightly less if I "romp on it" too much.

134 cubes. Highway speed is 55-60 mph. Mileage drops significanltly
for every 5 mi. over that.

I drive a 1968 MGB-GT with overdrive, and have found that I get highway
mileage that varies from an all time high last summer of 31 (overdrive
on a flat highway at a steady 60 MPH) to an all-time low of 24 this
winter (on a hilly stretch of road, with a heavy load). My city mileage
has varied from a low of 20 in Boston early last spring (when the car
was heavily loaded) to a high of 26 (little traffic, a warm engine, and
no extra baggage)...

My records show that my 1980 Colt gives an annual average of 38 mpg.
This includes all kinds of driving. The city/country average is
about 35 mpg, while the long trip average is about 40-42.
My 1976 Aspen annual average is 18 mpg, city/country = 17,
long trip = 20.

I sincerely trust that the person who started this flood of random data
plans to collect and digest them all, sort them by make and model of
car, and post a single summary to the net. It would have been
preferable, perhaps, for everyone to have mailed their responses to him
rather than filling the net with them.

Here goes mine:
'79 VW Dasher Diesel Station Wagon. Last tank--34; highest that
I remember offhand--42. My driving consists of daily commutes
(4 miles 1-way) of city and suburban driving (MPH<~45)
with occasional longer trips. I usually get around 35-37.
Note that this is CITY driving. My mileage is probably better
because I live in sunny San Diego (65 degrees? Brrrrrrr! I'd
better put on a ski jacket!). The transmission is 4-speed
	manual.

In return for good mileage, I lose power and acceleration and top-speed.
(You really feel it when you have four passengers (+me) and the back
filled with luggage and you're climing a hill!) I would say that the
car is utilitarian to da max. I does, however, handle well enough to
keep me happy (i.e. I can burn people on stretches of windy road.
I can't burn the high-performance cars, obviously, unless they're really
poorly driven (which occurs with suprising frequency. It's amazing how
many people go out and buy a super-expensive, high-performance driving
machine when they can't drive worth sh*t.)) This is getting too long.
