One thing that a lot of people are interested in is gas mileage, yet I don't recall seeing much discussion on what their cars *really* get. So how 'bout it? What kind of mileage does *your* car get? PLEASE - only those of you that have actually measured the mileage! No EPA estimates, and no "I get *about* 50 mpg!" Lets have the cold hard facts!!! I'll start things off with: 1979 Jeep CJ-7, 304 cid (5 liters) v-8 engine. All time low: 6 mpg, all time high: 15 mpg, 4 year average: 12 mpg. 1984 Pontiac 6000 STE, 2.8 liter v-6 engine. First tank: 18 mpg. Most of my driving comes from the 5 miles to and from work in the northern Illinois climate (in the winter time, the car barely gets off the choke when I get to work). -- Larry Marek ihnp4!ihuxf!larry

-- Here goes: '83 Rabbit GTI, 25 mpg on daily commutes (rural two laners, 35-55 mph), 29 mpg on highway trips (70-75 mph cruising). I've hit 30 only once in 14000 miles. And as long as I'm at it: '81 Kawasaki with clubman bars (the reduced frontal area really makes a BIG difference), 57-58 mpg on daily commute, 62-63 mpg on highway trips, same speeds. Eat your heart out, you gas mileage freaks! And BTW, my little Kawasaki has been known to thoroughly humiliate a '71 Corvette with a 454! Au Nguyen

[] `82 Reliant, 62,000 miles. (no, that's not a typo) Power steering but non-assisted brakes and no AC. Automatic slushpot. Average 23 to 24 mpg with Michelin XZX tires. With the original equipment (Goodyear Viva) I averaged 26 to 27. On the highway, I've gotten over 30 with the original tires (long trips, no traffic). Highway now is about 26 to 27 mpg. Worst? I'm not really sure, but I suspect that it went down to about 13 one night when I drove 95 miles in a snowstorm (2" to 3" all the way). It was so cold that I had to keep up to about 35 mph and stay in second gear to keep the engine warm enough to maintain torque. After that trip I started using cardboard in front of the radiator. I usually accelerate hard and cruise at the speed limit or with the majority of traffic. I just can't seem to make the time to allow for leisurely trips. This car's oil consumption was originally high (1800 miles/qt) but is now down to about 3300 miles/qt. I've had Mobil 1 in since about 7500 miles, and change it about every 22,000. As some of you may know, that particular stretch of Highway One is a biker's dream... and we took it an average of twice a week, for fifteen or so weeks. Then, of course, the road washed out. If only they could keep the RV's off that do 12.5 miles per hour on those sensuous curves. I drive a 1968 MGB-GT with overdrive, and have found that I get highway mileage that varies from an all time high last summer of 31 (overdrive on a flat highway at a steady 60 MPH) to an all-time low of 24 this winter (on a hilly stretch of road, with a heavy load). My city mileage has varied from a low of 20 in Boston early last spring (when the car was heavily loaded) to a high of 26 (little traffic, a warm engine, and no extra baggage)... Mark L. Here goes mine: '79 VW Dasher Diesel Station Wagon. Last tank--34; highest that I remember offhand--42. My driving consists of daily commutes (4 miles 1-way) of city and suburban driving (MPH<~45) with occasional longer trips. I usually get around 35-37. Note that this is CITY driving. My mileage is probably better because I live in sunny San Diego (65 degrees? Brrrrrrr! I'd better put on a ski jacket!). The transmission is 4-speed manual. In return for good mileage, I lose power and acceleration and top-speed. (You really feel it when you have four passengers (+me) and the back filled with luggage and you're climing a hill!) I would say that the car is utilitarian to da max. I does, however, handle well enough to keep me happy (i.e. I can burn people on stretches of windy road. I can't burn the high-performance cars, obviously, unless they're really poorly driven (which occurs with suprising frequency. It's amazing how many people go out and buy a super-expensive, high-performance driving machine when they can't drive worth sh*t.)) This is getting too long. --Alan J. Hu sdcsvax!hu P.S.
