There were a whole slew of York-type problems. The 40 mms on the Iowa during WWII WERE optically sighted. If you want an analysis of what was specifically wrong with the York, I refer you to the IEEE Spectrum article. Care to guess how much the investigative paperwork weighed compared to one platform? Henry was correct about the ineffectiveness of the 4.5, they were not only ineffective against aircraft, but marginally effective again shore targets as well. So we have come full circle back to why BBs.
