Most if not all new GM cars with microprocessor engine control shut off the A/C compressor when acceelerating at more than ~2/3 or 3/4 throttle. My 1983 Cimarron has only a 2.0 liter engine and I notice that when climbing a long grade in fifth with the A/C on the car gets warmer. I thought their was something wrong with the car until I consulted the shop manual which explained the A/C cutout. This provides all available power in passing situations.

These typically sense a change in manifold vacuum (caused by acceleration) and shut off the compressor. I know they can't be used on rotaries; I'm not sure if they're available for diesels or not. Cost is around $20 - $30; BTW, they're about the only aftermarket devices considered as true fuel-savers by the EPA! Andrew W. Rogers, Intermetrics ...{harpo|ima|esquire}!inmet!andrew
