From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Last August, I had the great pleasure of visiting Britain for a little over two weeks. (I *highly* recommend it, especially to military enthusiasts. You can't stumble out of a pub without bumping into a military museum ! 8-) Anyway, my friends and I went to Portsmouth, to see the Mary Rose restoration work, HMS Victory, and HMS Warrior (which has been superbly restored ! I'll have to write this one up in the near future.) As it happened, we were there the day before "Navy Day," when the Royal Navy puts on a show for the British. As we were waiting to tour HMS Victory, I noticed HMS Invincible docked nearby, and started to take some photos. A well-dressed gentleman approached me, and in a polite tone not possible without a British accent, informed me that, "I'm sorry, but you're not allowed to photograph the new ships, just the old ones. Tomorrow, you can photograph the new ones, but not today." 8-) My friends and I were, naturally, on a tight schedule, and couldn't return the next day. It had the trappings of a good show, though; we could see RN helo's out in the harbor, apparently doing mock ASW exercises; dropping smoke, etc. Did any of our British readers get to attend Navy Day ? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Bill Thacker moderator, sci.military military@att.att.com (614) 860-5294 "War is a matter of vital importance to the State; the province of life or death; the road to survival or ruin.
