[It may be better to put separate topics in separate messages, so subject searches will work properly. --CDR] From: maniac%garnet.Berkeley.EDU@ucbvax.Berkeley.EDU (George W. Herbert) RE USS Iowa: The ship is still fully operational. The #2 turret was cleaned up, and an assesment of what parts were needed to return it to full operation was made. When the Iowa returns to port next time, they will begin installing the newly fabricated parts. RE DF'ing From WW II to now, both the transmitters and DF equipment have gotten orders of magnitude better. A good squirt transmission takes under one second, but DF equipment can get at least a rough bearing on _anything_. This is one reason why the USN now uses Satellite com for subs talking back to US. The uplink from the sub is directional, so that nobody on the surface will hear it... george william herbert maniac@garnet.berkeley.edu
