[net.auto] Abrasive Windshield Cleaners

norm@mhuxt.UUCP (THOMPSON) (03/28/84)

I have been using a product called RAIN-X om my cars for several years now.
Recently, I went to a car wash and had the full treatment(wash,hot-wax,etc).
I am now noticing that my windsheild no longer scatters the rain like it used
to. In fact, when it rains, the wipers leave a cloudy haze. Looking at the
RAIN-X bottle, I find I can only remove the RAIN-X and hopefully the hot-wax
using an abrasive cleaner. Question, does anyone know of a product like this
that won't harm the glass. Any help is appreciated in advance. BTW I have
tried Windex/Glass PLus products and they don't make any noticeable difference.

Try ammonia and newspaper. That's about the best glass cleaner around.
If that doesn't work, BonAmi is non abrasive but cleans like it's Ajax.
If that doesn't work, try a liquid or cream abrasive. They are less so
than the powders but should do the job.

Ah Ha! The old car wash wax & hazy winshield demon strikes again.!!!
The problem you are having is not with RAIN-X ( a *fairly* good product ).
When commercial car washes spray hot wax (why is it hot???) on your car,
it tends to get on the glass. I got the hot wax once, I'll never do it again.
I tried various solvents for 2 hours, yet some wax residue still remained.
(Just a little bit of wax makes a BIG smear!!!)
While searching under the kitchen sink, I came across a bottle that said,
"DO NOT USE ON GLASS". Hmmmmm, could this be because it was too strong.
Since I couldn't see out of my windshield anyway, it couldn't hurt.
Voila, it did indeed work!!!! Just 30 minutes later, all the windows
were back to their sparking luster. After which I applied RAIN-X to
keep them that way. The remarkable solvent was the lowly FANTASTICK.
BTW, RAIN-X is a nice product to keep glass slick but it's an
even better conversation piece. My passengers get all upset when I
don't use the wipers, but when my speed hits ~50, the water beads up
and flies up on to the roof. The resulting expression of the passenger
worth the price of RAIN-X
