From: Michael J. Tighe <mjt@super.org> Some further clarifications on the AK-74: The AK-74/AKS-74 is built around the AKM-47 receiver. It has a new extractor and a higher bolt to bolt/carrier ratio, as well as a new muzzle brake. The muzzle brake actually increases the noise level at the end of the brake by at least one decibel, and also increases the flash by a factor of three. However to the shooter, the blast is reduced. The gas that follows the bullet out of the barrel is directed upward and to the rear. At the same time, small slots in the rear of the brake tap some gas and intercept this rearward moving gas and deflect it forward and away from the shooter. This reduces rearward recoil by 50% and eliminates barrel climb, even during full auto. This information is based on an AK-74 which was test fired over 8 years ago, since then there may have been some changes. ------------- Michael Tighe internet: mjt@super.org uunet: ...!uunet!super!mjt
