Thursday, 28 September 1939 The formal surrender of the Warsaw garrison is received, while in Moscow, the Nazi-Soviet partition is officially signed by von Ribbentrop and Molotov. The division of Poland leaves 20 million Poles, and over half the country's industry in German hands, while the Russians claim 13 million people and the bulk of the country's agricultural and oil resources. The Modlin garrison, comprising some 10 divisions offers to surrender; this is carried out the following day. The German-Russian demarcation line has now been reached by troops of both nations. Swedish Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sylvan petitions the government for a 34-million kroner grant to build a Swedish tank force. He cites the German success in Poland as justification.
