From: cdr@amdcad.amd.com (Carl Rigney) I don't mind future discussing future advances, but I'd prefer "hard" discussions, rather than speculation. It's easy to talk about "How does war change if cold fusion worked" but I'm more interested in the tactical changes to cope with advances in technology, new concepts, maybe even entirely new modes of warfare. This group recently discussed the saying that Generals are always preparing to fight the last war; it looks to me like the US is planning to fight the '73 Arab-Israeli war (Antitank missiles, Air Land Battle doctrine, etc.). While I would't want sci.military to just be a rehashing of previous wars, I do ask the readership to please remember the SCI in sci.military - speculation tends to have a high signal to noise ratio, and what makes sci.military most valuable for me are all the experts we have on various topics who are willing to share their knowledge and viewpoints. Those types of articles are easy to judge. Deciding which speculations are worth posting and which aren't is *very* time-consuming. Still, I've enjoyed my two months as Summer Moderator, and I'm glad to have been able to give Bill a bit of a break. I'm handing the group back to Bill Thacker on 10/1, so its only appropriate that I close with an article of his I've been saving for a low volume day. -- Carl Rigney ex-moderator of sci.military military@att.att.com Submissions as of 10/1 - NOTE THE CHANGE! military-request@att.att.com Add/Drop requests
