From: harold@celia.UUCP (Harold Buchman) In response to an inquiry about displays for submarine helmsmen- I recall seeing a picture of an experimental display in a book from the early 60's. Unfortunately, the book had no explanation beyond a brief caption, and no illustration of what the actual screen display looked like. It was switched off or blacked out in the picture. Its quite possible <my conjecture> that it was in fact a mechanical display, something like the meatball in an airplane. It's unlikely that they're processing active sonar returns for an elaborate display of the outside environment, since the computation would take quite a while, and you would not want to be radiating under most combat circumstances anyways
