How about just net.auto.sport, where we don't discuss the brake problems
on 1974 Pintos, and concentrate on performance cars, rallying, racing, and 
other performance tidbits.

Not a bad idea at all!  Perhaps net.sport.auto, though, to conform to the
other "sport" subgroups - or perhaps net.rec.auto.
