[sci.military] 50 Years Ago

military@cbnews.att.com (08/30/89)

From: military@cbnews.att.com
This is the introductory posting for a new serial, "50 Years Ago,"
which will recount WWII events half a century previously. This posting
will be repeated at monthly intervals, for the benefit of newcomers.

The chronology will be constructed from my reference sources. While
I will attempt to maintain a neutral stance, certain biases are
inevitable, as they are inherent in the references available to me.

I will briefly credit salient facts by author and title. Complete
references will be omitted for brevity, but I will be happy to provide
them, as well as references for any specifics mentioned in the
narrative, upon request. Three references, listed below, will be
used in virtually every edition:

C.Argyle, _Chronology of World War II_ (1980, Marshall Cavendish,
London) ISBN 0-89673-071-9

J. Piekalkiewicz, _Tank War 1939-1940_ (1986, Blandford Press, Poole)
ISBN 0-918678-08-0

R.Dupuy and T.Dupuy, _The Encyclopedia of Military History_
(1977, Harper and Row, New York) ISBN 0-06-011139-9

I will, in addition, attempt to include in my signature relevant quotes.
Some may be humorous, ironic, insightful, or even macabre; but I intend no
underlying significance or approval of them.

Followups to the chronology should be carefully considered. I don't
intend to turn sci.military into an historical forum, so please try to
limit followups to technical matters. I do, though, invite readers to
send in items to be included in upcoming editions. Please send the
material to me at military-request@att.att.com, at least seven days prior
to the date of the event. References are appreciated, when available.

From: amdcad!cdr (Carl Rigney)
[In response to a reader inquiry, Carl Rigney suggests the following:]

Here's how to set up a Kill file for everything BUT 50 years ago
today. Put the following two lines into ~/News/sci/military/KILL

/50 Years Ago/M
/./j

The next time you enter the group only the 50 Years Ago articles will be there.
This doesn't kill followups, but Bill doesn't seem to be doing many of those.
