The ads for the Autobahn Covert says it is better than Escort. It is a remote mount unit. I have seen articles asking to remote-mount the escort. Does this mean remote-mount is preferred by most users? What do you prefer? Both can be had for $245. Could some Escort users tell me if they would now prefer a remote-mount unit? (My ticket reads 64 in a 55 zone.) Rob Wood (decvax!genrad!rob)

#R:genrad:-392800:inmet:2700078:000:1070 inmet!grw Mar 29 11:26:00 1984 The Escort mounted on my visor would have been a problem (wire dangling and ugly adaptor sticking out of the lighter socket) but I have found a clever way to hide the wire by tucking it up on top of the roof liner, down the windshield post (behind the finish plate) and under the dash where I tapped into the power to the unused radio circuit (controlled by the ignition switch). I now have an unobtrusive permanent installation (I can still take the box off the visor and lock it in the glove box or trunk) that keeps the detector a little higher with respect to the horizon than mounting behind the grille. The Escort manual specifically states that higher mounting spots give slightly more warning. Be careful. Any radar detector of any make and mounted anywhere is not a substitute for keeping your eyes open or adjusting your speed to the road. A trigger operated K band gun on a winding road will still get you if you are not careful! -- Gary Wasserman ...harpo!inmet!grw ...hplabs!sri-unix!cca!ima!inmet!grw ...yale-comix!ima!inmet!grw
