From: munnari!csc.anu.oz.au!bxr307@uunet.uu.net The only problem with using something like a Laser as means of communication on the battlefield is that it wouldn't work through the "fog of war". In that such things as dust, smoke and hills would interfere with the beam, scattering it. Lasers are much more suited to naval use where the only problem might be water vapour dissipating the beam. However even then it would allow RF silent comms at longer ranges than semophore (flags) would allow.
