From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Monday, 23 October, 1939 The French government admits that they have abandoned their positions in the Wandt Forest of Germany, returning the front to its pre-war line. This had previously been denied in an attempt to keep this information from the Germans. Germany announces her intention to keep the scope of the war limited, focussing her efforts on breaking Britain's military blockade. French officials claim that this policy of "fighting the British and courting the French" will not succeed in breaking their resolve. Major-General J.H. Beith of the British War Office Propaganda section officially recommends that copies of _Mein Kampf_ be sent to troops at the front. Soviet-Finnish negotiations resume in Moscow. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "We shall soo know whether we Swedes are Germans or Russians !" current joke in Sweden, referring to the interplay of Russian and German desires in Scandinavia.
