From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Tuesday, 7 November, 1939 At Hitler's order, the offensive against France, planned for 12 November, is postponed. The invasion will be put off 13 more times before May 9th, 1940. The crowns of Belgium and the Netherlands release a joint appeal for peace, "before the war breaks out on the Western Front in all its violence." The neutrals offer their services as mediators in the war. France, Britain, and Germany all express polite interest. The Italian press responds vigorously to yesterday's condemnation by the Soviet-backed Comintern, frankly warning Russia to stay out of the Balkans. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "We are therefore fighting to maintain the rule of law and the quality of mercy in dealings between man and man and in the great society of civilized states." - Viscount Halifax, British Foreign Secretary
