From: boulder!boulder!eesnyder@ncar.UCAR.EDU (Eric E. Snyder) I have seen some pretty nifty an very effective silencers for .22 long rifle pistols and rifles, eg the Parker and Hale "sound moderator". My question is how effective are small silencers at suppressing the report of larger cartridges such as .223 Rem? Obviously, one can't do much about bullet noise but the muzzle report could possibly be controlled. Would the dimensions of the "gas bottle" need to be significantly increased to be effective or could .22 LR silencers be used on a larger weapon, eg an M-16?
