Barricades are built around the Jewish quarter in Warsaw by occupying
Germans.

Churchill proposes to use aircraft to lay mines in the Rhine, between
Strasbourg and the river Lauter.

The USSR and Japan begin negotiations on a trade pact.

A further two merchantmen are lost to mines in the North Sea. Germany
disclaims responsibility for yesterday's sinking of the Dutch liner
Simon Bolivar, but Britain charges that the mine was laid by U-boats
of the Kriegsmarine.

A demonstration by the 7th Regiment, 107th Infantry (The Old Seventh)
of the New York National Guard shows the virtue of the Army's new
Garand rifle. Prone markmen were able to fire 32 shots per man per
minute, compared to only 20 shots for the older Springfield rifle.
