[sci.military] Sparrows

A recent Raytheon ad in AW&ST for their Sparrow
radar-guided anti-aircraft missile touts it as
"combat proven". When was it successfully used
in combat? I seem to recall that Sparrows were
used in the most recent encounter with Libya but
that they missed and Sidewinders made the kills.

Was there another incident or is that what they
    are referring to?

The Sparrow missile has been around for quite a while. It was used
in Viet Nam, in the '73 Arab-Israeli war, in the '82 battle of Bekaa (sp?)
Valley battle between Israel and Syria, and probably in several other
wars/battles that I've overlooked.

As to just what the ad was referring to, I think you'll have to call
Raytheon :-)

First, in the Libya incident, Four Sparrows were fired, one hit, a
25% hit ratio, [not bad for air to air weapons in real useage].
Two sidewinders were attempted to be fired, one would not lock and
was not launched, the sicond was fired and hit.

Second, the Sparrow has been used since and including the Vietnam war
and in Israeli service, and has several hundred kills if i remember
my statistics right.
