From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Tuesday, 9 January, 1940 Following several depth-charge attacks on British submarines operating in the Heligoland Bight, the Royal Navy halts submarine operations in that area. The liner Dunbar Castle is mined and sunk off England's southeast coast; two other merchantmen are also lost to mines, and numerous ships are bombed and strafed by the Luftwaffe. All units of the RAF operating in France are placed under the command of Air Marshal Arthur Sheridan Barrat. Protests are raised in France's Chamber of Deputies over the attendence of seven Communist Depties, four of whom had been ousted by a previous vote of censure. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "I would add that if the forces of right are to prevail, we must not hesitate to risk our blood and our treasure for so great an end." - Neville Chamberlain
