From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Monday, 22 January, 1940 Finland announces the creation of a Foreign Legion, containing volunteers from several nations, including Britain, Sweden, and Norway. Five separate attacks aimed at outflanking the Mannerheim line are defeated. Meanwhile, Soviet radio broadcasts attempt to discourage the defenders. The United States issues a sharp demand that Britain change her policy on American shipping in the Mediterranean. The communique cites excessive delays are being imposed which, relative to the more lenient attitude toward Italian shipping, are seen as discriminatory. From November 15th to December 15th, US vessels were delayed an average of 14 days, compared to only 4 days for Italian merchants. London also receives a strongly-worded message from Japan, in protest over yesterday's boarding of the Asamu Maru. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@cbnews.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Viborg will be taken within forty-eight hours.
