Interesting editorial in the 8 Jan issue of Aviation Week. The USMC is
fitting all its large aircraft with passive missile-warning systems,
radar warning receivers, flare and chaff dispensers, and infrared jammers.
The USAF Reserve is fitting some of its transports with a less ambitious
set of defences. But the USAF's heavies, including the C-130s and C-141s
which took the first waves of paratroops into Grenada and Panama, are
completely unprotected against fighters and ground-launched missiles, and
there are no plans to change this.
