The 83,000-ton liner Queen Elizabeth secretly leaves Britain on her maiden voyage to Halifax and New York. She carries a new degaussing rig to neutralize magnetic mines. Undersecretary Welles meets with Premier Mussolini in Rome, delivering a personal note from President Roosevelt. He is to leave tonight for Berlin, with an unexplained 24-hour detour to Switzerland. The US Senate's Republican majority passes (over Democrat protests) a resolution memorializing Congress to pass a law barring any President from seeking a third term.
