The 7th Panzer Division, under Major-General Erwin Rommel, breaks through
the French lines near Amiens, advancing 32 kilometers.  French bombers
attack the spearheads.  Ground is also gained at other points along
the line, despite the stubborn defense.

The U-46 sinks the 20,000-ton merchant cruiser Carinthia west of Ireland.

With the approval of the USSR, Sir Stafford Cripps is appointed British
Ambassador to Moscow.

Thomas J. Watson, president of IBM, returns the Merit Cross of the German
Eagle awarded him in 1937 by Adolf Hitler for his efforts toward world
peace and trade.  Watson states that "Germany's present policies are
contrary to the causes for which I have been working."
