From: steve@ncsc.navy.mil (Mahan) I asked about 6 current and former SEALS about the reasons for the two inch unsharpened portion on the six inch custom blade knife. The summary of the responses follows: 1. Throwing, some people like to choke up on the handle instead of using the blade tip 2. Safety, careless people playing with the knife 3. Stabbing with fingers over the guard for more positive recovery grip. 4. To keep from cutting lips/mouth/tongue when carrying knife in teeth. :-) Also hand to hand/knife is considered obsolete for current SEALs. This may or may not help but is all I could find out.
